New Online Courses Make Fair Housing Law More Accessible

Over the past few years, we have seen the benefits of having the option to work or learn remotely. From convenience and comfort to time and money saved, there are a number of reasons that people prefer the option of attending trainings, events, and classes online. And while in-person learning works better for some, it presents a number of barriers for others. Schedule conflicts, lack of childcare, and unreliable transportation are just a few barriers folks often face that make it difficult to attend in-person trainings and events.

In an effort to make fair housing law more accessible to community members who may not otherwise have access, The Fair Housing Center recently launched three new online courses, which are free and available to the public. All you need is an email address and an internet connection in order to enroll in a course. If you don’t have access to the internet at home, but still want to take a course, you might consider visiting your local library branch or contacting PCs for People to learn if you qualify for free or affordable internet. Once you are enrolled in a course, you can start learning from anywhere and complete the course at your own pace. Learn more about our new courses below:

1. Fair Housing for the LGBTQ+ Community

Starting with the history of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement, this course will provide you with a better understanding of what fair housing rights — as well as barriers to fair housing — exist for individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. After completing this course, you will be able to identify housing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and know what steps to take if you need to exercise your fair housing rights.

2. Know Your Rights: Criminal Records & Fair Housing Law

If you are a renter who has had interactions with the criminal legal system, this course is for you. Enroll in this course to learn everything you need to know about your fair housing rights when it comes to criminal records and tenant screening.

3. What Every Landlord Should Know: Criminal Records & Fair Housing

This course was created with housing providers in mind and outlines what every landlord should know about criminal records and fair housing. Learn more about your responsibilities as a housing provider under fair housing law when it comes to renting to tenants with past interactions with the criminal legal system.

With our online courses, you can get the knowledge you need at a pace that works for you, at absolutely no cost. Whether you’re a housing provider, real estate agent, social service provider, tenant, or home owner, we have a course for you!
