Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Ohio Mortgage Lending - March 2008
This report examines mortgage lending applications and originations
for the State of Ohio and its seven largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs)
– the Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, and Youngstown
MSAs – to determine if there are racial and/or ethnic disparities in who is
denied mortgage loans and, for those who obtain loans, who receives “high-cost”
loans. The data reveal disparities in mortgage lending based on both race and
ethnicity. Moreover, an examination of the income levels of applicants reveals
that these disparities exist regardless of income. Click

Cuyahoga County Foreclosure Project - December 2003
In
April of 2002, Housing Research & Advocacy Center began to do a
comprehensive study of foreclosure filings in Cuyahoga County beginning with the
year 1997. In Cuyahoga County, all
foreclosures are handled at the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas through
the Magistrates Department. In
1997, 3,867 cases were referred to the Magistrates Department and by 2001, 7,161
cases were referred to the Department (85% to 90% of cases referred are
foreclosures). The years in between
reflect a steady increase with an enormous expansion by 2001.
For this study, we will be looking at a sample of the files in 1997, 1999
and 2001. Our sample data will include: prime/subprime loan, interest rate,
location of property, number of times refinanced, amount financed, presence of
balloon payment, and disposition of the property.
By looking at this type of data we hope to identify the
effect of deregulation in the financial services industry is having on Cuyahoga
County. We would be able to compare
the proportion of prime and subprime foreclosures and hopefully, be able to
isolate some predatory lending practices from the prime and subprime loans.
With our mapping capabilities we will be able to illustrate the data in a
meaningful way, showing the location of foreclosures throughout the county.
Once this data has been collected and analyzed, The Housing Center hopes to use the
information to better educate the public, elected officials and community
organizations on issues related to lending patterns and access to credit.
In addition, we hope to maximize our efforts in promoting equal access to
credit and educating consumers on how best to finance their homeownership needs.
