In recent years, housing
discrimination complaints have been on the increase for the disabled
population. Many landlords do not know
their responsibilities regarding reasonable modifications and reasonable
accommodations. Even some architects,
builders and planners do not fully understand their duties to design accessible
properties.
The federal government and Ohio’s
stricter building code regulate the design and construction guidelines. The Housing Center will host a seminar to
promote compliance with those guidelines, as well as new Americans with
Disabilities Act and Ohio Building Code
provisions, which go into effect March 15, 2012. The seminar will also provide information
about the visitability movement.
The free seminar to be held on
February 9, 2012 at the Cleveland Hilton Garden Inn will feature disability
expert, John Catlin of LCM Architects in Chicago; Jan Sokolnicki of Ohio Board
of Building Standards; and Housing Center Executive Director, Hilary King.
Cuyahoga County will issue municipal “points” to participants for county grant applications based on submissions of a certificate of attendance. |
